English at Monega

At Monega we follow the National Curriculum for all subjects. The curriculum contains the programmes of study and attainment targets for all subjects, at all key stages. All local authority-maintained schools in England must be teaching these programmes of study from September 2014.


English at Monega Primary School


English is a major area of the school curriculum since children need to use and develop their English skills: discussing, listening, reading, writing and thinking skills throughout the day.


In line with the New National English Curriculum the teaching of English is structured to help develop skills in:


  • Spoken Language
  • Reading: phonics, paired reading, guided reading, listening to serial reads, reading for pleasure and research
  • Writing: composition, spelling, punctuation and grammar


English Overview
We believe that literacy and communication are key life skills and central to children’s intellectual and social development. We agree with the statement of the National Curriculum, that ‘pupils…who do not learn to speak, read and write fluently and confidently are effectively disenfranchised’. Through the English curriculum, we help children develop the skills and knowledge that will enable them to communicate effectively and creatively to become independent learners.


At Monega, we provide a challenging and enjoyable English curriculum for all pupils in order to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum programmes of study. English is embedded throughout the whole curriculum to ensure children are developing transferrable skills.


Phonics sessions (RWI) begin in Early Years, teaching children their letter/sound recognition alongside handwriting skills. As children progress, these phonics sessions help to develop reading and spelling skills. High frequency words are taught in Early Years and throughout KS1 and early KS2 to aide sight recognition and spelling of frequently occurring words.



In order to fully immerse children in what they are reading, they are given opportunities to write creatively through a range of text types and for a variety of purposes.  Children are encouraged to orally rehearse sentences and develop the writer’s craft through editing and drafting. Lessons involve careful planning of Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar in order to develop key skills as children move up the school. Writing is further developed by shared and modelled writing where children develop confidence in sentence structure, word choice and cohesion.


We encourage developmental writing from an early age to give children the confidence to put their ideas onto paper as this will help children to see themselves as writers/authors from the very beginning. Writing skills are developed using exciting visual aids (e.g. pictures, paintings, puppets, models, special objects) and we encourage participation with role play/drama and lots of discussion.


We model writing skills through shared and guided writing sessions, and develop grammar, punctuation and spelling skills in preparation for a more extended piece of writing. Drafting, redrafting and proof-reading an initial piece of writing will help children to correct any errors and to improve and extend their writing. It is also important to consider an outcome for children’s writing, as publishing a piece of writing will help each child to perceive him/herself as a real author with an audience in mind.


Reading skills are taught through phonic sessions and guided reading where the focus is on quality texts. Guided reading is a half an hour session where children are able to immerse themselves into a text and respond to key questions about what they are reading.  Children are encouraged to capture their ideas through a range of exciting opportunities such as drama and role play as well as debate.
