Maths at Monega

At Monega we follow the National Curriculum for all subjects. The curriculum contains the programmes of study and attainment targets for all subjects, at all key stages. All local authority-maintained schools in England must be teaching these programmes of study from September 2014.

Maths at Monega Primary School


Mathematics at Monega Primary School follows a cyclical approach, using the Maths No Problem scheme. Topics are taught and revisited several times over the course of the year to ensure consolidation and mastery is achievable with the support of concrete materials.


Maths No Problem was developed by Maths Specialists in Singapore following their poor performance in International League tables in the early 1980’s. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated by Singapore’s position at the top of current International tables and explains why their methods are used in over 40 countries across the world.


The focus of Maths No Problem is to work on core competencies and to build the children’s relational understanding of mathematics. The whole class works through topics at the same pace, but there is plenty of opportunity to challenge the more able learners through problem solving around the same concepts and topics whilst giving less confident children time to master key concepts and skills.


By introducing Maths No Problem to Monega Primary School, the children are given the opportunity to explore mathematical concepts using practical resources, before using pictorial representations of problems. This then leads to problem solving questions which encourage pupils to develop a higher level thinking, a core part of the current national curriculum.

How we know your child is succeeding


Throughout every Mathematics lesson, we use a range of assessment for learning strategies to check the children’s understanding and quickly identify any misconceptions. These are then targeted through in class support and additional support outside of class. At the end of each lesson, teachers assess whether or not the children have met the learning focus for the lesson and this feeds in to future planning and intervention.
