Monega Primary School

Music at Monega

At Monega we follow the National Curriculum for all subjects. The curriculum contains the programmes of study and attainment targets for all subjects, at all key stages. All local authority-maintained schools in England must be teaching these programmes of study from September 2014.

Please see below for the details of the National Curriculum for Music.

Music is an integral part of Monega life. Working with Newham Music Academy we provide General Musicianship for Year 3 where children are able to learn basic skills in counting, rhythm, reading music and singing. Year 4 learn to play the recorder and Year 5 and 6 have topic music lessons where they compose and perform music relating to their current topic. All children sing regularly through singing assemblies or singing sessions in Early Years.

In addition to the music we learn in class we also have:

ECAM – Every Child A Musician

This programme allows children in Years 5 and 6 to play a musical instrument for free. They receive half an hour lessons in a group every week.  Learning an instrument is a great way to develop your child’s confidence, creativity and concentration skills. They will also have the opportunity to perform in concerts to the rest of the school. Please encourage your child to look after their instrument and also to practise regularly. If, for some reason, your child’s instrument has been damaged please let the school know as soon as possible.

Music Clubs

We offer Ensemble Club and Choir each week. Ensemble involves children who play a musical instrument to play together and compose music and our choir comes together once a week to sing and perform with each other.

Please follow the link below for more detailed information, directly from the DfE, regarding the National Curriculum and programmes of study for Keys stages 1 and 2 as well as additional information on each subject.
