We have had a great start to Reception. Children have been practising to write their names using name cards. We have been focussing on our pencil control and letter formation.
In Reception, parents were invited to have a lovely afternoon picnic with their children. During their picnic, children had the chance to read some of their favourite stories with their parents while eating the food they had prepared for them in the morning. This was a great opportunity for parents to spend some quality time with their children, as well as getting to see their learning environment in which the children helped create.
In our Maths oracy lesson we made jam sandwiches. Our learning objective was to identify and count parts of a sandwich. To achieve this we had to follow a set of instructions and cut the sandwich into parts. We then counted the parts in the correct numerical sequence.
In Nursery this week, we have been talking about our local area and the places we see when we go walking. Many children were able to remember Monega Road, Plashet Park, Lidl, Tesco and the sweet shop. Here are some of the maps, which the children made independently. All children showed high levels of fascination and engagement during this activity!
This week, the Nursery have been very excited to be growing caterpillars! Having already read the book ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, the children have great knowledge of how caterpillars grow and transform into beautiful butterflies! Lots of children were able to explain that the caterpillars are inside a special house called a cocoon and that the caterpillar has to stay inside their cocoon for two weeks. Some children even made observational drawings of what they could see!
As part of their summer topic, Nursery are learning about carnivals around the world. During the half term holidays, the children created their own carnival outfits and musical instruments using resources they already had at home. They enjoyed a carnival celebration on their first day back, exploring the sounds of musical instruments and creating their own dance moves!
In Reception, we learn about science through Understanding of the World.
We have been learning about the life-cycle of plants and butterflies. We planted sunflower seeds and we are observing them grow. We also have live caterpillars which we are nurturing until they change into chrysalis and then emerge as beautiful butterflies.
